“How long did he suffer before someone noticed?”
The Washington Post picked up Bowen Levy's story over the weekend. It contains very little that I hadn't already read in the Capital's coverage of his death. The Post's story didn't change my opinion on the school system's handling of Bowen's death. Whether or not the Levys sue – and they'll win if they do – Superintendent George Arlotto has already lost. You can't prioritize damage control over basic decency without leaving a piece of your humanity behind.
Whatever the failures inside Central Special on the day Bowen choked, the responsibility extends beyond its walls. The district administration – Arlotto and those under him, who allocate funds and oversee special education services – failed to provide Central Special with the resources needed to support its students. The school board should be reminded of that when Arlotto's contract is up for renewal.
